So You Want to be a Vegetarian?

June 6th, 2011

Becoming a vegetarian has gained widespread acceptance in the past 5 years as research is showing that eating a vegetarian diet will lower a persons risk for high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes and cancer.

There is more than one way to eat a vegetarian diet. You should know yourself enough to know if going cold turkey or moving into a vegetarian lifestyle slowly will be more successful. Making the change slowly begins by excluding meat and fish. Some people find that excluding one type of meat a month makes the transition easier.

Others find it easier to just go cold turkey – throwing out all the potato chips, and processed foods while giving away the meat, dairy and eggs. Either way you choose to go, you must have a significantly strong reason for doing it. Without a strong reason you’ll find that you are quick to return to McDonalds, hamburgers and fried chicken.

The Days of Your Cycle

May 26th, 2011

Your menstrual cycle is controlled by hormones that are produced and released in response to neurological and chemical control. Your body is an incredible complex mechanism that works hard to maintain balance and health. During the first 13 days of your cycle the uterus begins to build up a lining in preparation for pregnancy while an egg in the ovaries is maturing and getting ready for release and a trip down the fallopian tubes to the uterus.

Screen Your Fitness Trainer

May 25th, 2011

Ask for references from your fitness trainer and check them out. If the previous customers were happy you are more likely to have found a fitness trainer who can help you achieve your goals. If previous customers weren’t happy find out why. It might be that the trainer pushed them faster or harder than they wanted – which might be just what YOU are looking for.

And don’t rule out the personality factor. If you don’t get along with the trainer or don’t feel comfortable then you will have more trouble staying focused and motivated to achieve your goals. Trust your instincts. You don’t want your time with the fitness trainer to be stressful because of personality differences. There could be enough emotional stress involved if you are struggling to maintain an exercise program in the first place.

Fitness Programming

May 23rd, 2011

Your first step is to determine your goals. Your fitness program will be designed to achieve your goals. Do want to be able to walk up the steps without losing your breath, carry groceries in from the car effortlessly or run 4 miles a day? Whatever your goals or your current level of conditioning there is a fitness program for you.

Once you’ve figured out what you want to achieve, your next step is to figure out how to get there. There are an abundance of fitness programs to help you meet your goals from fitness walking, yoga, rowing, swimming, golf, running, and Tae Bo. Your choices are phenomenal. They can be simple or complex, indoors or strictly outside, individually performed or with a team.

Trainers can often help you choose a fitness program that best fits your needs, goals, lifestyle, financial abilities and current level of conditioning. Time limitations will also play an important part in crafting a fitness program that will work just for you. If you have arthritic knees then running would not be a good choice but walking on flat ground would be fine. If you have a rotator cuff injury then swimming might cause inflammation but soccer, running, Tae Bo or yoga would do the trick.

Fitness Equipment

May 22nd, 2011

If you are using exercise to cross train for another sport talk with a fitness trainer or do your research to determine which pieces of cardiovascular and weight equipment will best meet your individual needs. These work outs are done on your “off days” of training and should not overwork muscles you are already training during regular workouts.

The two obvious choices are to workout in a gym or at home.  There are pros and cons to either system.  Working out at home gives you privacy and the flexibility to work out on your own hours as well as more time to work out.  Exercising at a gym gives you access to personal trainers and top-notch equipment but you lose the flexibility and the privacy.  Only you can decide which factors are more important to you.

Home fitness equipment should be able to withstand daily personal use without breaking the bank.  Pay very close attention to space you have for storage, your goals and desires as well as the reliability and function of the fitness equipment you are considering. Talk about your options with fitness trainers at the gym and check “references” and reliability on the equipment with friends, family and reviews on the internet.

Look for equipment that is easy to set up, tear down and has satisfactory quality.  If you can’t try the equipment out be sure the money back guarantee is long enough to ensure several weeks of use and time to ship it back if you must.

If you get bored easily be sure the fitness equipment has options to change the routine.  DVDs are another popular way to workout at home and usually only include the cost of the tapes, weights, steps, or exercise mat or ball.  These DVDs will also decrease boredom since there are usually several different versions of the same programs to use.

Standard fitness programs include strength training, cardiovascular workouts and flexibility.  When you decide to purchase your own fitness equipment be sure that it includes 2 of the 3 pieces of a good program.  When you own the fitness equipment space is usually an issue.  Having a piece of fitness equipment that does 2 of the 3 important pieces will decrease your need for any other types of equipment.

Fitness equipment comes in all shapes and sizes.  Take a look at the late night/early morning infomercials and you’ll see fitness equipment built for cardiovascular work, strength training, target trouble areas, overall weight training; all with the promise of fitness that is faster and easier than anything else you might try.

Don’t be fooled.  Although they may promise a great physique in 20 minutes 3 times a week it usually takes longer time and more dedication to achieve the results of the fitness models in the advertising.  Like anything else in life that is worth the effort, fitness comes at a price.  Your time, your effort and your interest will all determine your results.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy

March 17th, 2011

Nicotine replacement therapy, or NRT, is a smoking cessation method.  When asked why people will not quit smoking, the fear of related withdrawal symptoms was the number one reason for many people.  If you quit smoking today, nicotine would still be in your body for as many as four more days.

Why is nicotine such a problem for quitting smoking and leading to withdrawal problems?  Because nicotine, which is found naturally in tobacco, is highly addicting.  Quitting smoking is all the more difficult, because the smoker has developed a dependency to the nicotine.  So even though you very much want to quit smoking, and want to quit today, the related withdrawal symptoms like headaches, dizziness, sleeping problems, anger, and even depression can make it impossible to do so.

Nicotine replacement therapy, or NRT, is a method of quitting smoking by using a product that will deliver nicotine into the bloodstream on a reduced and diminishing dosage than the smoker is getting from cigarettes.  The nicotine in the NRT products also do not have the same toxins that are found in cigarette smoke.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy And The American Heart Association

The American Heart Association believes that nicotine transdermal patches and other nicotine substitution drug products, such as nicotine gum, can help smokers quit when used as part of a comprehensive smoking cessation program.  Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) has been shown to be safe and effective in helping people stop using cigarettes when used as part of a comprehensive smoking cessation program.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy Products

NRT products are available as gums and patches over the counter, and there are sprays and inhalers where you will need a prescription.  What is important to continue to remember is that nicotine replacement therapy is still using nicotine, and thus it is very important that the smoker does not cheat and continue to smoke while using it.  If this was the case, then the amount of nicotine is going to be increased to possible toxic levels, and increase the nicotine addiction problem.

The nicotine replacement therapy approach allows the smoker to quit with less nicotine withdrawal problems, while also allowing for the smoking habit and anchors to be discontinued.  This is important to note, because smoking can be both a physical and a psychological addiction issue, and NRT is only going to aid by getting rid of the craving for nicotine – not the underlying reason for why the person is smoking.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy Success

The goal in using nicotine replacement therapy is to stop smoking completely. If you plan to take nicotine medications begin using them on the day you quit.

Quitting smoking is typically going to cause withdrawal symptoms, and the smoker knows that the way to get rid of these is by smoking a cigarette.  Therefore, getting nicotine in another way like from the nicotine replacement products is a way to get rid of the problems from withdrawal while quitting smoking.

NRT and its more gradual approach then quitting immediately, allows the smoker to focus on addressing the psychological issues that are going to be necessary to keep them from starting to smoke again, instead of the physical pain and discomfort from the nicotine withdrawal.

Adding counseling, or using a program like Quit Smoking Today, can increase the success of the nicotine replacement therapy.

Why Is It So Hard To Stop Smoking

February 21st, 2011

The mental aspect of smoking is probably the biggest problem for quitting. This just can’t be a physical reason causing people to be this illogical. After all, you know the tremendous costs involved both to your health and finances from smoking. You are willing to increase the odds to get major illnesses and diseases – you are even willing to die from smoking. But in spite of this, you continue to smoke. Also, keep in mind that there was no physical addiction related to why people start smoking. There must be some further psychological dependency that keep people smoking, and there must be some psychologically perceived benefits that cause them to ever start smoking.
